At the heart of the the Sidobre granite massif, the Peyro Clabado is one of the most impressive natural wonders in the Tarn. This immense block of granite, weighing nearly 800 tonnes, appears to be balanced on a base measuring barely one square metre.

A short walk takes you easily to the rock and allows you to explore the wooded landscapes surrounding it. The path continues on to the Pic des Fourches, where an information board offers a sweeping panoramic view of the Sidobre and its hills.

Children particularly enjoy this setting filled with giant stones and boulders in astonishing shapes. The tour also provides an insight into the work of the granite stonemasons, which is deeply intertwined with the history and identity of this region.

The walk is short and easy, but do bear in mind that shoes suitable for natural and sometimes uneven paths.

A LAKE AMIDST THE ROCKS

Lake du Merle, an iconic landscape of the Sidobre

Surrounded by greenery, the Lake Merle is one of the most recognisable landscapes in the Sidobre. Imposing blocks of granite rise out of the water and seem to float on its surface, creating a calm and almost mysterious atmosphere.

The site is a lovely spot to stop off for a stroll, take a few photos or simply enjoy the cool shade of the trees. Depending on the season and the light, the reflections on the lake completely transform the landscape.

From the lake, visitors can continue their exploration towards the Sidobre House or join other trails in the massif. The The Trail of Wonders, situated nearby, offers views of the Roc de l’Oie and several rock formations whose shapes have inspired numerous legends.

ABOVE THE ARNETTE GORGES

The Mazamet footbridge and the village of Hautpoul

Hanging nearly 70 metres above the Arnette Gorges, the Mazamet footbridge offers a spectacular experience at the foot of the Montagne Noire. The walk reveals a remarkable panorama of the valley, the forests and the surrounding hills.

The footbridge leads to the medieval village of Hautpoul, perched on its rocky outcrop. Its ancient alleyways, stone houses and panoramic views bear witness to the history of this former stronghold overlooking Mazamet.

Access is on foot via a path comprising a climb that is at times steep. It is therefore best to make sure you have suitable footwear, water and enough time to reach the footbridge without rushing.

This excursion can also be combined with a visit to Mazamet or a walk in the Montagne Noire. You could also make the most of your day to Discover Castres and its houses along the Agout.

A REFRESHING BREAK IN THE MOUNTAINS

Lake Montagnès in the heart of the Montagne Noire

Situated at an altitude of 680 metres, the Lake Montagnès is surrounded by the vast forests of the Montagne Noire. Its lush green surroundings make it a particularly pleasant destination on hot summer days.

A walk of around 2.7 kilometres takes you round the lake, allowing you to enjoy its varied scenery. With picnic areas, a fitness trail and a range of leisure activities, families can easily spend a good part of the day here.

In July and August, a beach and a swimming area supervised swimming pools offer a refreshing break. Other activities, such as tree-top adventure courses, mini-golf and water games, are also available during the summer season.

After a walk or a stroll across the footbridge, Lake Montagnès is an ideal spot to relax by the water’s edge and enjoy the coolness of the forest.

Explore the trails, forests and legends of the Tarn

The discovery of the Sidobre and the Montagne Noire is not limited to their best-known sites. Take the time to wander along the little forest paths, look out for the rocks hidden beneath the trees and stop for a break by the lakes.

In the Sidobre, every rock has a name, a shape or a legend. Roc de l’Oie, Rocher Tremblant, Trois Fromages and Saut de la Truite turn the walk into a real game of spot-the-object. In the Montagne Noire, the forests, streams and viewpoints create a wilder atmosphere.

These two areas make it easy to alternate between family walks, exploring nature and more challenging hikes.

The Maison du Sidobre is also a worthwhile stop to learn about how the massif was formed and the history of granite quarrying. In the Montagne Noire, the many signposted trails allow you to extend your walk depending on your fitness level and the time you have available.

As a general rule, allow for between 40 minutes and an hour’s journey from Le Rousieux Campsite, depending on the location chosen and traffic conditions.
To make the most of your visits, make sure you one day in the Sidobre and another in the Montagne Noire.
Wear comfortable shoes that are suitable for nature trails, stony or steep paths.
Make sure you take enough water with you, particularly if you’re heading to the Mazamet footbridge or walking the trails in summer.
If you have young children, opt for short walks along the Peyro Clabado, from Lac du Merle or the Maison du Sidobre.
Before you set off, please check the access conditions for the footpaths and the times when supervised swimming is available at Lac des Montagnès.
In summer, do remember to pack a picnic and make the most of it the coolness of the lakes and the shaded paths.

Sidobre and the Montagne Noire: our suggested itineraries

To explore these two regions at your own pace, it’s best to set aside one day at each destination. In the Sidobre, start at Lac du Merle before heading to the Maison du Sidobre and the Sentier des Immortels. Then carry on to Peyro Clabado and round off the day with the Sentier des Merveilles or a stop at the Saut de la Truite.

For your day out in the Montagne Noire, head to Mazamet in the morning to cross the footbridge and explore the medieval village of Hautpoul. In the afternoon, head to the Lac des Montagnès for a walk, a picnic or a swim during the summer months.
